4 steps to clean a cast-iron skillet

Although cast-iron skillets have been used for many years, their current rebirth may have you wondering how to properly clean one. In this post, we'd like to explain how to clean this powerful instrument in four simple stages.

Step 1: Gather materials

You'll need the following tools to thoroughly clean your cast-iron skillet:a steel wool scrubber, a scrub brush or sponge, a soft towel (for wiping), kosher salt, dish soap, baking soda, white vinegar, canola oil, or another vegetable oil. Of course, you'll also need your dependable, soiled cast-iron skillet.

Step 2: Get the timing right

As you can probably already see, compared to other enamel goods in your cupboards, cast-iron cookware has a different cleaning routine. The cast-iron skillet should be cleaned as soon as you can after using it, ideally while it's still warm.As the heat cooks any residue in the restaurant, we scrape down the sides.

When food is actually stuck, try using a sponge, a paper towel, and a little amount of coarse kosher salt to remove the stuck-on particles. Koludrovic advises using a wooden pan scraper to remove any extremely stuck-on food residue after returning the cast-iron skillet to the heat by adding water and bringing it to a boil. Cleanse the water after allowing it to cool.

Step 3: Hand-wash the pan

Fortunately, cleaning a cast-iron skillet isn't that much different from cleaning a regular pan, despite its potential advantage as a cooking tool. The primary distinction is that you don't want the skillet to sit in water since it will cause the cast iron to rust. Scrub away with a little dish soap and hot water. Take into account utilizing a stiff brush as a scraper if the food is severely caked on. Dry the pan entirely before seasoning the surface with an oil such as flaxseed or canola.

As said, a cast-iron skillet may be cleaned using dish soap. There is a widespread myth that putting dish soap on cast-iron cookware will invariably harm it and remove the seasoning that has been baked on. However, if you use an environmentally friendly solution, the cast-iron skillet's protective oil coating won't be removed.

Step 4: Make time for maintenance

If you treat a cast-iron skillet with the correct care, it will eventually become naturally nonstick. Reseasoning your pan is another essential component of caring for it. This important step prevents corrosion of the pan and provides you with a clean cooking surface.

This procedure may be started by setting the pan on the stove with plenty of kosher salt. After that, cook for 10 to 15 minutes at high heat. Following this, you must pour vegetable oil into the skillet and cook it for 10 minutes over high heat (you may also use canola or flaxseed oil).Wipe out the excess oil and seal in that coating of seasoning after allowing the heated pan to cool. As an alternative, you may bake your greased pan for one hour at 375 degrees Fahrenheit on your oven rack. After letting the pan cool and cooling the oven, clean it and store it.
